Some Enchanted Evening

Some Enchanted Evening is the best of Rodgers and Hammerstein

Enchanted-photo1On July 29, 30, 31 and August 1 Marin Summer Theater (MST) will present Some Enchanted Evening – The Songs and Dance of Rodgers and Hammerstein.  This final production of the MST 2010 season is a song and dance revue of the most successful composing team that Broadway as ever produced.

Some Enchanted Evening includes not only the wonderful title song from South Pacific, but over thirty numbers from Sound of Music, Cinderella, Carousel, King & I, Flower Drum Song and Allegro.  The program includes “My Favorite Things”, “I Enjoy Being a Girl”, “I’m Gonna Wash that Man”, “O What a Beautiful Morning”, “Shall We Dance” and many, many more.  Audiences will delight in hearing old favorites and neglected gems in this fast paced, inventive revue.

Featured in the ensemble are Bouket Fingerhut of Tiburon (who played Mama in MST’s CHICAGO), Sarah Stahl and Ryan Berry (San Marin class of 2007), Victoria Pereira of San Rafael (Marin Catholic), Lauren Sutton-Beattie (MSA), and Ryan Rohtla (San Marin class of 2009).

Enchanted-photo2“Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II were innovators and superstars of Broadway,” says Artistic Director Patrick Nims.  “They were the original EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) team with 2 Emmy Awards, 2 Grammy Awards, 15 Academy Awards and 34 Tony Awards.  They also won 2 Pulitzer Prizes just for good measure.  Even more amazing is that  Oklahoma! and Carousel were written before the first Tonys were awarded in 1947. “

According to co-directors Kate Kenyon and Samantha Maas-Baldwin many of the younger cast did not know the music or the shows before rehearsals started.  “They had heard of Oklahoma and King and I but they did not know what they were about. When they heard the music they got really excited,” said Ms. Kenyon.

Enchanted-Photo3Cast member Victoria Pereira of San Rafael was familiar with the music because she has been in several Rodgers and Hammerstein shows.  But she says that this is different.  “The music is wonderful because it is so classic.  Doing all of these songs in a single revue is much more fun than doing just one show.”  Ms. Pereira also is enjoying working with the cast.  “Everyone is fantastic, it feels like we are all the same age because everyone seems so professional.”  The MST company ranges in age from 13 to 23.  “ And I love dancing with Sarah Stahl [who just completed an American Ballet Theater intensive]”.

Some Enchanted Evening – The Songs and Dance of Rodgers and Hammerstein opens on July 30  at 8pm at the Emily Gates Student Center at San Marin High School in Novato.  A pay-what-you-will preview performance will be given on July 29 at 8pm.  Other performances are on July 31 at 8pm and August 1 at 2pm.
