The Importance Of Being Earnest

Love and Laughter Abound in The Importance of Being Earnest

dsc_0171_w300_h275Marin Summer Theater (MST) is presenting The Importance of Being Earnest on July 12, 13, 14, 15 in Novato at San Marin High School.  Written by Oscar Wilde and directed by Broadway actor Jim Poulos, “Earnest” promises to be delightful, romantic and fun.

The Importance of Being Earnest is considered by many to be the funniest play ever written in the English language.  It revolves around a case of mistaken identity. In order to impress their beloveds, two flippant young men (Jack and Algernon) each pretend that his name is “Ernest”, which the young ladies (Gwendolen and Cecily) believe confers magical qualities on the possessor.

“Oscar Wilde was brilliant at constructing dialogue.” says Director Jim Poulos. “He had an intelligence and wit that is very funny, but also biting.”

The play is a satire of upper-class polite society. Its subtitle, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People mocks “serious” people that do not consider comedies to be worthy entertainment.  “Jack’s character, is supposed to represent honor and trustworthiness with good moral values. But he leads a completely secret, double life and is totally untrustworthy.” says Poulos.dsc_0561_w300_h362

The play is very relevant in the modern world. When Jack proposes to his beloved Gwendolyn, she is more worried about writing it all down in her diary then she is in the experience. She would rather have a love story to read about later. “This is very much like today.” Says Poulos. “We would rather tweet about something while it is happening than experience it for ourselves.”

Earnest is brilliantly funny and was the play most requested by our audiences.” said MST Artistic Director Pat Nims. “It is a comedy that skewers the “1%” while remaining charming and romantic.  Oscar Wilde’s words are smart, sassy and hilarious.  Audiences will be delighted by the fun and brilliance of this play.”

Jack and Algernon are played by Evan Held and Taylor Brindley of Novato, and Gwendolen and Cecily are played by Christie Chenette of Ross and Jane Reagan of San Rafael.  Completing the cast are Kyla Ainsworth as Lady Bracknell, Kaitlyn McEowen as Miss Prism, Peter Winkeller as the Rev. Canon Chasuble, Jack Sabido as Lane, Sam Levy as Merriman, and Kayla Kaufman as the maid.  Ainsworth, McEowen, and Levy are Novato residents, Winkeller is from San Rafael and Kaufman is from Kentfield.
